From fabric offcut to BLUEBUCK trunks: the journey of recycled cotton
In a garment factory, cutting fabric inevitably creates offcuts. These pieces, too small to be reused, account for up to 25% of each roll. For a long time, they ended up in the bin. Today, they take a different path.
These offcuts, known as "pre-consumer waste", are collected from factories, sent to a recycling facility, shredded mechanically and then spun again to create new yarns. These yarns become a fabric. That fabric becomes a pair of recycled-fibre trunks. Made of 95% recycled cotton and 5% elastane, it has a slightly different feel from virgin cotton: a little peach-skin, typical of the shorter fibres that come from mechanical recycling. Breathable, absorbent, durable. And made without extracting any new raw material.
What “more eco-friendly” means in figures
Organic cotton is already virtuous. Recycled cotton takes a different path, for a simple reason: it doesn't need to be grown. What it actually avoids:
- Between 300 and 450 litres of water per piece of underwear, entirely saved compared with virgin cotton
- The whole farming stage: no land used, no irrigation, no inputs
- A significant share of the CO2 emissions linked to producing the raw material

A close fit, details that matter
The same manufacturing standards as the rest of the range. Mid-rise, neither too high nor too low. Elastic waistband made with 60% cotton in Austria, soft and leaving no marks at the end of the day. Cotton inside label, sewn so it never itches. And manufacturing entirely in Portugal, in a factory powered 100% by solar electricity produced on site. Recycling the material and then making it with fossil energy would be stopping halfway.
Four options, zero bad surprises
Our recycled cotton trunks come in packs of 3. Three white recycled cotton trunks, three navy blue recycled cotton trunks or three black recycled cotton trunks, as you prefer, or one of each colour if you'd rather mix. Simple, direct, no unnecessary options. Exactly in the spirit of the product.
Recycled cotton is made from fabric offcuts recovered in factories, whose original colours vary and are hard to control. To get an even shade, the fabric has to be redyed. Complex or very saturated dyes are harder to achieve on recycled fibres without using chemical processes we'd rather avoid. White, navy blue and black aren't a limitation we put up with: they're the three colours that give a flawless result with the most restrained processes. And frankly, nobody's ever had too much white, navy blue or black in their drawer.
Yes, with one nuance on the initial feel. As recycled cotton fibres are shorter, the fabric is slightly more textured than organic cotton. But in terms of resistance to washing and holding their shape, our recycled-fibre trunks are designed to the same standards as the rest of the range. Worn and washed regularly at low temperature, they keep their cut and comfort over time. That's the very principle of a garment designed to last, whatever material it's made from.
